What is BlaqLGBTHistory?
BlaqLGBTHistory is a collaborative digital storytelling and preservation project that uplifts and archives the rich history of Black LGBTQIA+ communities in Washington, DC. It’s part of the implementation of the Black LGBTQIA+ History Preservation Act of 2024 passed by the DC Council.
Who is behind this project?
This initiative is led by a coalition of local organizations and grantees, including Rainbow History Project, Center for Black Equity, Modern Military, Octane Public Relations, among others. We’re working alongside community members, historians, and activists to preserve our shared legacy.

What is the goal of the Black LGBTQIA+ History Preservation Act?
The Act mandates the creation of a comprehensive report that documents the history, spaces, figures, and impact of Black LGBTQIA+ communities in DC. It also calls for public engagement, community input, and educational recommendations.
What will the final report include?
The final report will feature historical narratives, archival photos, oral histories, and a curated look at cultural, political, and social milestones. It will also include curriculum recommendations and public outreach strategies.
How can I contribute to the project?
We welcome contributions from community members! You can:

Can I share a story about someone else?
Yes—if you have permission or are sharing in honor of someone else, you can absolutely contribute their story. We may follow up to confirm details or permissions if needed.
Will the public have access to the final report?
Yes. The final report will be published and made publicly available both on this site and through the DC Office of LGBTQ Affairs. We’ll also host public feedback sessions prior to its release.
Will you be collecting surveys or feedback from the public?
Yes. As part of our research and engagement process, we’ll be sharing a public-facing survey to gather community input. Stay tuned to our website and social media for launch details.
I have photos or documents I’d like to submit. Can I do that?
Absolutely! You can upload materials on our Get Involved page. We ask that you only share materials you have rights to or permission to distribute. If you’re unsure, contact us directly and we’ll work with you.
